goings on in Port Lavaca

here are a couple of things that happened here on Saturday…

PORT LAVACA – S. Matt Read squinted his eyes in reaction to the 100-degree Texas sun as he sat on a stoop near the Bayfront Peninsula on Saturday.

It’s something he must get used to if he wants to hike the Texas perimeter in a year’s timeframe.

The 32-year-old Corpus Christi native started the first leg of his hike on Aug. 28 in his hometown and plans to go counter-clockwise along the Texas border.

This is the total distance around Texas…
Rio Grande ————————-889.0 miles
Coastline —————————367.0 miles
Sabine River, Lake and Pass —–180.0 miles
Sabine River to Red River ——-106.5 miles
Red River ————————- 480.0 miles
East Panhandle line ————–133.6 miles
North Panhandle line ————-167.0 miles
West Panhandle line ————–310.2 miles
Along 32nd parallel —————209.0 miles

Total ——————————–2,842.3 miles

Flippin’ and Floppin’.

PORT LAVACA – The day’s forecast called for 90-degree weather, food, music and flip flops. Plenty of flip flops.

The city held its first ever Flip Flop festival on the Bayfront Peninsula Saturday.

Though the event was not as large as other longer-running Festivals, the event was far from a flop.

“It’s controlled chaos, but it’s good,” said Lacey Ekberg, Chamber of Commerce director. “It’s definitely pretty good for the first year.”

Ekberg and several other event organizers set up prior to the event wearing yellow shirts that read, “Don’t make me slap you with my flip flop.”

Thanks a lot for your mishandling of Social Security

I paid into Social Security for 42 years, starting in 1957 and now for the first time the feds say no COLA for two years. That is not a great amount , usually the increase is around an average of $24 per person who is receiving SS.

The big thing is that the costs of the Medicare prescription drug program are going up along with the Medicare Part B coverage. So if there is no COLA for 2 years, and the insurance premiums increase that works out to a decrease in your monthly SS benefit.

The government seems to think that the automakers, fannie mae, fannie mac and other big mismanaged companies are more important than over 30 million seniors.

One thing for sure is that the seniors vote and they don’t forget being mistreated.
